ADJUSTABLE SPANNER: Describes either a crescent wrench or pipe wrench, with a fixed jaw and a movable jaw controlled by a spiral gear, to install or remove bolts and nuts of various sizes. The crescent spanner has smooth jaws, while a pipe wrench's jaws are serrated.

ALIGNING PUNCH: Describes a specialist tool in the shape of a thin rod used to ensure that holes line up exactly when assembling two or more components.

ADJUSTING SHIM: Describes a thin washer that reduces or increases the clearance between two components.

ADJUSTING SLEEVE: Describes a small cylinder that sits on the end of the tie rod, which shortens or lengthens the rod to make changes in the toe-in and toe-out function.

ANGLE-NOSE PLIERS: Describes specialist pliers fitted with long jaws bent at right angles to aid in gripping an item that is difficult to reach with regular pliers.

ANGLE SCREWDRIVER: Describes a specialist tool shaped like the letter L with a blade at either end.

BRASS PUNCH: Describes a drift or punch made of brass used to remove bushings and bearings. Popular because brass does not score or mark steel.

BALL END HEXAGON SCREWDRIVER: Describes a tool that looks like an Allen wrench, except it has a small ball at the very end, allowing it to operate at various angles.

BAR CLAMP: Describes a tool with a stationary head and a sliding foot used for clamping purposes.

BASTARD FILE: Describes a file with a coarse cut.

BATTERY CLAMP: Describes the hold-down device, which prevents the battery from moving around in the engine bay.

BIT: Describes the tip of a screwdriver.

BIT ADAPTER: Describes the tool like a screwdriver with a hollow socket instead of the blade that accepts various bits.

BOSS: Describes an extension or strengthened section that holds the end of a pin or shaft.

BOX SPANNER:   Describes a hollow tube with a socket at each end and two holes through which a bar can be inserted to turn the wrench.

BOX WRENCH: Describes a tool designed to secure or remove a bolt or nut. Each end of the wrench fits around the bolt head or nut.

C-CLAMP: Describes a tool which is in the shape of the letter "C". A screw at one end of the clamp forces the end of the screw against the object to be secured.

CHAIN FILTER WRENCH: Describes a chain wrench which encircles the oil filter to assist in its removal.

CHIPPING HAMMER:  Describes a hammer used to remove the slag from weld seams.

CHISEL: Describes a thick pencil shaped tool with a sharp flat end like a blade screwdriver. When a hammer strikes the blunt end, it forces the blade end into the metal to mark it or even cut through it.

CHUBBY SCREWDRIVER: Describes a screwdriver with a short handle and blade for reaching into confined spaces.

CLICK-TYPE TORQUE WRENCH: Describes a torque wrench that gives out an audible click when the pre-set torque is reached.

CLUB HAMMER:  Describes a hammer with a short handle but a large, heavy head, used to hit the back end of a chisel or drift.

COMBINATION WRENCH:  Describes a flat wrench with a hexagonal ring at one end and an open end at the other.

COPPER-FACED HAMMER: Describes a type of hammer with a round head made of copper or brass liable to cause more minor damage than a steel hammer.

CRESCENT WRENCH: Describes a type of adjustable wrench with smooth jaws.

DEPTH GAUGE: Describes a measuring tool for determining the depth of an item.

DIAL TORQUE WRENCH: Describes a wrench with a socket end that measures the torque of a nut-bolt fastener, registering the value on a dial.

DISTRIBUTOR WRENCH: Describes the special tool used to tighten or loosen the distributor hold-down clamp when installing or removing a distributor

DOUBLE-ENDED SPANNER: Describes a tool with a hexagon ring at each end.

DOUBLE HEXAGON SOCKET: Describes a tool socket fitted with twelve points instead of the standard 6 points.

DRAIN PLUG WRENCH: Describes a tool used for removing and tightening drain plugs on transmissions and engine sumps.

DRIFT PUNCH: Describes a tapered tool used to remove or install pins, shafts, rivets, or align holes when inserting screws and bolts.

DRILL BIT: Describes a piece of rod with spiral recesses cut in it and a hardened steel tip, made in different sizes for drilling different-sized holes and inserted in the chuck of a drill used for boring or cutting.

DRIVE HANDLE: Describes a tool used for turning sockets to loosen and tighten nuts and bolts, with a male square drive that can be inserted into the female square drive of sockets for the turning operation.

DRIVE TOOL: Describes any form of tool or accessory for use with a socket wrench, including the drive handle.
