MAGNETO IGNITION: Describes the compact assembly comprising a magneto generator, an ignition coil, and a distributor through which ignition voltage is induced within the magneto by the movement of a coil relative to the poles of a permanent magnet.

MULTI-SPARK COIL: Describes an ignition coil used in static high-voltage distribution, designed as either a double-spark or four-spark coil.

PICK-UP COIL: Describes the coil found in an electronic ignition system through which voltage is induced.

POST-IGNITION: Describes the ignition stage of air-fuel mixture after the electrical ignition has been shut off.

REFERENCE IGNITION PATTERN: Describes the use of an oscilloscope pattern taken from an intact ignition system for comparison purposes.

RETARD: Describes a procedure used to set the ignition timing involving adjusting the camshaft, distributor spark, or valve operation.

REQUIRED IGNITION VOLTAGE: Describes the maximum high voltage level required to produce a spark under standard conditions.

SATURATION PERIOD: Describes the length of time breaker points are closed current flows through the primary windings of an ignition coil.

SECONDARY CIRCUIT: Describes the high voltage part of the ignition system.

SEMICONDUCTOR IGNITION SYSTEM: Describes an ignition system using semiconductors for switching operations.

SLIDING CONTACTS: Describes a form of ignition assembly that causes a moving contact to slide vertically across the face of the fixed contact when a spark is advanced.

SURFACE IGNITION: Describes a scenario where ignition is initiated by hot spots generated in the engine cylinder rather than by a timed spark.

TRANSISTORISED IGNITION (TI): Describes a form of ignition system available as breaker-triggered TI with contact breaker that uses its a transistor as a power switch.

TWIN IGNITION SYSTEM: Describes a type of distributor fitted with two sets of contact points, each operating with its own coil in a separate primary circuit with each set firing half of the cylinders.
